Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – November 25, 2025 – Medical Value Chain (MVC), a leading blockchain-based pharmaceutical track-and-trace platform, in response to the agreement between EFDA and MVC for MVC to provide a Platform for Pharmaceutical Traceability to combat substandard and counterfeit medicines for the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.  MVC dispatched a technical delegation to Addis Ababa to commence formal discussions with the Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Supply Service (EPSS), the government agency responsible for the procurement, storage, and distribution of pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, and laboratory reagents to public health facilities nationwide.  

During the high-level meetings, MVC and EPSS explored a comprehensive integration roadmap that includes linking EPSS’s warehouse management system with MVC’s Smarthub Connect™ track and trace on the blockchain platform, incorporating serialization and labeling requirements for pharmaceuticals, and streamlining the national tender process with end-to-end traceability. 

Both parties emphasized the critical need for close collaboration among the Ethiopian Ministry of Health (MOH), the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA), EPSS, and Medical Value Chain (MVC) to ensure seamless implementation and regulatory alignment. 

The initiative directly addresses the global counterfeit pharmaceutical crisis, which analysts estimate costs between US$200 billion and US$432 billion annually. Counterfeit and substandard medicines not only erode public trust but also contribute to treatment failure, prolonged illness, antimicrobial resistance, and preventable deaths.  

By deploying MVC’s immutable blockchain technology across Ethiopia’s pharmaceutical supply chain, the partnership aims to guarantee full visibility from manufacturer to patient—eliminating counterfeit products, ensuring every medicine dispensed in public facilities is genuine, safe, and effective.
